In my previous post, I mentioned about me being here in Tacloban having some issues with the dialect spoken in this City. Now, I'll be sharing you all the words or phrases I've learned in speaking the Waray dialect. I learned this words and phrases while I was outside walking, riding a jeepney, going to stores etc. etc. I didn't learn it by asking the people, I just analyze the thought of the sentence that they are saying. So here are some of the Waray words that I can translate to Tagalog.

  • Maupay = Maganda or Tao po
  • Mapaso = Mainit
  • Pasahe  = Pamasahe
  • Alayon = Makikisuyo
  • Waray = Wala
  • Kulop = Hapon
  • Maupay na aga/kulop = Magandang umaga/hapon

I think I forgot some of the words and phrases but as what I've observed, some are easy to understand but most are difficult. ☺

    Haha. I still need to practice more! :D

  3. That is great Boffill! You're learning the language fast. Madali lang naman matutuhan ang Waray eh. How long will you based in Tacloban? Have you already tried eating binagol and moron? hehehe Those are my favorites!

  4. Boffill says:

    Ah! Haha. Yup. Practice practice na but its really hard learning the dialect. Hmm. Anyway, nakakain na ako ng Binagol and Moron. Dati kasi nung nasa Davao pa ako, lageng nagdadala si Tatay ng binagol for pasalubong and with regard to moron, gumagawa yung Aunt ko ng moron dun sa Naval, Biliran. :D

    I wish I can learn the Waray dialect. I already know three Filipino dialects, the Tagalog, Cebuano, and Dabawenyo. It's not easy to learn them all because we Filipinos have over a hundred dialects. Can you believe that?;-)

  6. Maupay na (paano sa Waray ang gabi?) :)

    @Nonoy: That's true Noy, that's how unique Filipinos are. We have lots of dialects to learn. :D

    @MinnieRunner: Maupay na Gab-I that is. :D

    @Ping Rain: Hehe. Yup yup. I will. I like the dialect actually.
